Volcanic Balance

Improving bend on a circle with a great visualization.

In our course, "Function of Horse and Rider," we've discussed unconventional examples to enhance your understanding of proper bending. One such image is that of riding on the rim of a volcano. This striking analogy can help you visualize the delicate balance required to maintain a true line of travel on a circle.

Imagine the Volcano

Picture yourself riding on the edge of a smoldering volcano. If you fall inward, you'll be consumed by the fiery lava. If you fall outward, you'll tumble down the steep slope. It's a precarious situation that demands constant vigilance and a determined mindset.

Applying the Analogy to Riding

Similarly, riding a circle requires a delicate balance to stay on the line of travel while keeping the horse balanced on all 4 feet. If your outside aids are not complementing the bend, chances are that your horse might lose his haunches and start leaning or drifting out. While the loss of support on the inside might open the door for your horse to drop on the inside shoulder or trail with the haunches in.

Remember, bending is a delicate balancing act that requires focus, consistency, and effective use of your aids. With practice and patience, you can master this essential skill.

In our 'Function of Horse and Rider' course, we use unconventional examples to enhance your understanding of horse training. One powerful tool for identifying imbalances in your own posture on a circle is simply walking on the ground.

Try this exercise at home or with a friend! Which side feels easier?
